Balikbayan
"A Filipino visiting or returning to the Philippines after a period of living in another country."
What is a Balikbayan?
Balikbayan literally means “return to country” (balik = return, bayan = country/town). It refers to potential Fil-Ams (Filipino Americans), OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers), or Filipino immigrants visiting home.
The Cultural Phenomenon
When a balikbayan arrives, it is a huge family event.
- Feasts: Expect heavy eating and family gatherings involving the whole barangay.
- Balikbayan Box: The famous box sent or brought home, packed with chocolates, canned goods, lotions, and sneakers for the family.
- Generosity: Balikbayans are often expected to treat everyone (libre) because they “earned dollars.”
Dating a Balikbayan
If you are dating a Filipina and you visit the Philippines with her, you might be treated like a balikbayan even if you are foreign, especially if you bring pasalubong!
